To all Muslim visitors and orchid friends and lover around the world, I wish you Salam Aidilfitri (Happy Eid Mubarak) and Happy Holiday to all my visitors, orchid friends and lover around the world ;)

'Instead of those two days, Allah has appointed two other days which are better, the days of Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha.' ~ Hadith Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

*Eid-al-Fitr (Eid Mubarak) ~ is celebrated on the first day of Shaw'waal, at the completion of Ramadan. Shaw'waal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The Eid-al-Fitr is a very joyous day; it is a true Thanksgiving Day for the believing men and women. On this day Muslims show their real joy for the health, strength and the opportunities of life, which Allah has given to them to fulfill their obligation of fasting and other good deeds during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Hybrid orchid (even sometimes species) normally comes with different variation in terms of colors, form or shape. Some of its' so beautiful and unique, the rest are not. If too much of mutation normally not beautiful...sometimes less is more! For more article about orchid mutation, you can read here!

Here I share the orchids with mutation blooming in OdD this week. This is just a few from all blooming orchid this week.

BL Morning Glory is another primary hybrid in the OdD collection. The parentage of this allied hybrid is between Brassavola nodosa and Laelia purpurata. This BL Morning glory have many variant such as Valentine kiss , H&R, Gracielle, Verily and Remar, may be have any others which I cannot find the source. This variant orchids is comes from the parentage itself, Laeila purpurata, which have so many variant (I just have few in my collection and will post it here when they bloom in my garden). I also  plant both of this parentage in my garden.

Brassavola nodosa
Laelia purpurata

                         X

In OdD only has H&R variant, some of this variant can be whitish to pinkish shades on the petal and sepal. This hybrid (any variant)  normally can easily recognize from the lips, which is combination of the B. Nodosa and L. purpurata lips. B. nodosa lips has wide open, while  L. purpurata  have long throat and the lips not so widely open. This BL Morning Glory have very nice lips which is striking feature with dark magenta veins radiating from the throat to the edge, which is overlaid with magenta blush. The petal and sepal is more likely with the parentage B. nodosa, which is small and thin. Here I share some of the pictures of this plant which is blooming now in OdD.

This lovely Cattelya has blooming two times this year and three times in total since I bought it since last two years from seedling. She produce four buds from two bulbs, but unfortunately, one bud dropped after attacked by bug. So just three buds can success till full blooms. Since I a bit late shoots the picture, one flower is a bit over blooms, that why only two flowers I focus here.
There are many different  naturally form and varieties on this cattelya, such as with pink, magenta/purple color on the lip or sepal or petal, eg. suave, tipo, orlata, rubra, marginata and many more.

Since this Cattelya is crossing between variety aquinii 'A' and marginata vera, she have both characteristic. I have never had such abundant results on this Cattelya before, since I plant her two years ago. She have deeper magenta/purple on the front lope and the lip and edges of the lateral lope and magenta/purple splash at sepal.

Cattelya intermedia (aquinii 'A' x marginata vera)

Cattleya intermedia is a bifoliate, intermediate to warm growing epiphyte from the Atlantic coastal forests of South America. She grows around the sea level. It is a very easy to grow here in Malaysia and free flowering. Previously I have only 'suave' variety and this variety is more easy to take care and flowering. This crossing also have same as my previous Cattelya intermedia.
The plant I bought last two years ago had pseudobulbs measuring about 4cm tall, and since it is too small, I figured it takes more than two years to be matured and flowering. But it takes less than that and just about one year. The first flower is not so big, but consider nice to me as I publish here. Well, this lovely Cattelya has grow larger and larger now and the blooming bulb is measuring around ~ 18 cm tall now...maybe can grow more bigger after this. Currently she still have another two bulb with buds, hope it just fine until full bloom.

I grow it potted in a pot with charcoal and exposed to light with 50% shades, and watering just one time a day. I give fertilizer once a week and alternate with fungicide and pesticide .

This Agricultural Exhibition (locally known as Mo'o) is annual event and held on second  or third week of August every year in Prince of Songkla University, Hatyai Campus. It's start on 12 August and will end on 21 August 2011. The event for this year is more bigger than previous year and this is 4th year I visited this event. Normally I went there by public transport and just 1 day trip, but this year drive my own and stay there for few days.

Crowd in Mo'o 2011
Mo'o venue - other plants vendors

My focus on the event of course for an Orchids, but it not just that! there are a lots of varieties of plants sale including gardening needs and latest machines for farmers. Even though there are a lots of attractions and new vendors, orchid still a big attractions! More vendors are sale orchid plants and orchid needs. Other flower? So many varieties!

My point of view, this event is more like MAHA show, which held every two years in Serdang, Malaysia. Last time I think, this events is more bigger than Malaysia. Now after a few times of organizing Agricultural show in Malaysia, MAHA Show is more bigger than this festival. The much intention and interesting here is the new technologies of hybridizing plant and gardening needs. Every year there are plenty of new hybrid plant, not just flower plants, but also fruits plant. You can see the new hybrid of coconut plant, which can harvest after only 1 1/2 years! The fruit? So many!

The mango plant also quite interesting, new hybrid with red color skin! I think this is hybridizing with Nam Dok Mai variety, never seen this in Malaysia. They ask me to try....but cannot try...because I'm fasting, maybe next time! Also have big size of banana....so big I think, do not know the how to pronounce it, because they pronounce in in Thais ;)
I have posted last year article here!
