Taiping Orchid Show was held in Taiping Lake Garden, Perak on 9 Jan 2011. I joined this show with friends, Zul and Ibrahim. This show was organized by Taiping Orchid society in conjunction with Annual general meeting. Not many participant was joined this show, maybe due to many of them get prepare for coming show in Penang on 14 Jan 2011. The winning prize there more bigger than this show.
In Taiping Orchid Show, I just entered 6 plants and won 4 of them, but non of its won the 1st prize. The reason why I cannot win the 1st prize because all of my orchids are over-bloom. Then after this orchid show, I need to get ready for back-to-back show this Friday (14 Jan 2011). This week, I also bit busy with venue set -up in Chinese New Year orchid show in Penang, coz I'm one of the organizer committee. Beside that I also busy with the new land for home and garden, the progress is almost 80% finish and i will update later in the new post.
Here are some photos during Taiping Orchid Show.

Is it Orchid? For the 1st time I see the plant I not realize that once is orchid. This happens 12 years ago...not so many reference I have, even computer and internet is live in separate world with me. I just use the computer for my assignments , just use Word, Excel and sometime programming languages. That time I'm still in the university study my bachelor degree.
After I got a job, I bought my first orchid book in 2000.....really excited, Orchids: The Living Jewels of Malaysia, the price is RM98.00 (USD32) with promotion price, the original prize is RM132 (USD43).
My 1st orchid book in collection! I did survey the price of orchid book here in Malaysia last time, it is too expensive, but now it getting cheaper. Now I have a lot in my collection, not just orchid books but also gardening books. You can story your 1st gardening book here, by commenting my post.
Back to the title, is it orchid?
Absolutely YES! Commonly it's known as Jewel orchid. Here is the fact about this orchid...
Jewel orchids are so called because of their extraordinarily beautiful foliage which comes in a variety of colors. They are not a specific genus of orchids, but rather a grouping based on their intriguing leaf coloration. The leaves are often velvety which increases the visual effect of the colors and sometimes provides a different coloration when viewed from different angles. Most are terrestrial or ground growing plants, although they must be grown in open mediums. Most require constant moistness and high humidity. For terrarium or Wardian Case growers, the jewel orchids are considered among the best plants to grow as they provide year-round beauty and contrast. Many people have had very good luck growing these jewels in bathrooms where they normally thrive due to the high humidity. They do flower, of course, but these flowers are generally of little interest to most gardeners [Susan Taylor - Bellaonline's orchid editor]. Need more? Link
For the people out there who admire to plant this orchids, you should have really shady place or otherwise you can plant this orchid indoor. Here I link another orchid suitable for indoor plant, let visit

Here are some orchids in bloom @ my garden. Some orchids bloom too early for the competition. Maybe only a few can enter the competition this week in Taiping Orchid Show and few for Chinese New Year Orchid Show on 14 Jan.
Enjoy the beauty!

New year just start few days ago. Beside the remaining garden I have, now I'm start work with new garden, the new chapter of gardening project. 01 01 11 it's start a new gardening adventure!
My partner and I, bought this land last August and planning to build our home with dream garden. Our planning is to build traditional Malay houses, full with orchid garden and poultry farm. The location of this land is very peaceful and unique, nearby rice filed and have very good scenery. This land area are 16,000 square feet, more than enough for us to build house and garden.
Clearing the land, is the difficulties to start this project, it is because this land contains of too much water and have full of mud. First, we needs to clear the bushes and coconut trees, then flatten the area to ensure its higher than the rice fields.
The weather plays important role during this progress. Base on our local weather last year, during this time no more raining, but this year until 1st week of January, there are still raining. So clearing the land and flatten the area cannot done on schedule. Now, the progress have been stop for few days because of this reason.
By the way, here is some progress for this project.
