Bulbophyllum kubahense

This orchid only can be found in Sarawak at elevation around 100 to 200 meters. So this species also knowns as The Kubah National Park Bulbophyllum. The size of the flower is around 2.5 cm. This bulbophyllum is miniature sized and hot growing at low level epiphyte with distant cylindrical pseudobulbs carrying a single leaf.
Inflorescence up to 15 - 17 flowers carrying non-resupinate, wide open, mostly simultaneously opening flowers.

Blooming @Orchid de Dangau: Bulbophyllum graveolens 'spotted'

Bulbophyllum graveolens 'spotted'

This bulbophyllum under section Cirrhopetalum which is fringed-petaled. Other name to this bulbophyllum is robust cirrhopetalum.

This species originated from New Guinea in rainforests on tree trunks at elevations between 100 to 600 meters. It has a very large and single leafted epiphyte. The leaf size can achieve up to 9 inch long some times can more than that. This orchid bracteate inflorescence which has an apical umbel of many long-lasting flowers sometimes more than 10 flowers. It held below the leaves.

This species requires a heavy pot to contain the large and robust plant and should be given hot temperatures, partial shade and high humidity as well as regular watering.

Even if the flower is no more, still, the fragrance can be~Jaggi Vasudev

My way replant orchid: Bulbophyllum beccarii

This is the way I replant orchid bulbophyllum type, but this post only focus on Bulbophyllum beccarii. The way replant bulbophyllum may varies depends on their needs.

The easy way to get the tips are study their habitat and try to copy and suit with your environment. Basically bulbophyllum needs around 60% shades, high humidity and airy.

Bulbophyllum beccarii is found in Borneo at elevations sealevel to ~ 600meters, means that this is lowland species. Good news to the collectors, especially for the collectors stay in Peninsular Malaysia.

This species needs hot to cool growing creeping epiphyte that wraps around the trunk of the tree. The shape of the leaf are cup shape, thick and leathery to trapping the falling dietrius from the tree and is invaded by a tangle of roots.

From the habitat descriptions, this species will go around the trunk and the leaf will have cup shape to trapping the dietrius to keep the media always moisture inside the cup-shape leaf . This trapping media also will give the nutrients to the plant. It means that this is compulsory to culture this plant in that way.

The flower are hanging in pendant, densely many flowered cluster below the base of the leaf. It smell like rotten meat or like rotting Pygmy Borneo Elephant. Even though it really smelly, my opinion the flower really beautiful and elegant.

Let see how I replant this orchid.

First, what you need:

1. Fern bark

2. Sphagnum moss

3. cocopeat

4. Hanging wire

5. Garden wire/ raffia

The fern barks have to join together to give enough space to the plant to growth. It joined by using hanging wire (gating green wire) and tied up with cutting wood.

Garden wire used to tied the bulb and the leaf to be cup shape to the fern bark

The leaf need to tied up to the fern and it should wrapping to be cup shape and round the fern bark (trunk).

Fill in the sphagnum moss and coco-peat, layer by layer until reach the dirt marking in the cup shape leaf.

First layer : sphagnum moss

Third layer : Sphagnum moss

Now, the plant ready to hang....

Jalan-jalan cari orkid: Kuala Lumpur

Setelah pulang dari MAHA 2012 minggu lepas, OdD langsung jalan-jalan cari orkid bersama OC dan DPF. Kebiasaannya kami bertiga...three musketeers ;)

After got back from MAHA 2012 Show, my schedule is jalan-jalan to Orchid Nursery in KL area. I went to this nursery with my best partners; OC and DPF, normally three of us...orchidist call us three musketeers ;)

Semasa di pameran MAHA 2012, tidak banyak yang menarik perhatian OdD, nak kata ada semua...melampaulah pula, cuma kurang berkenan di hati. Jadi untuk mengubat luka dihati, yang kurang berkenan di MAHA 2012, jadi singgahlah pula di Hourai Orchid Nursery. Edisi yang lalu pernah OdD paparkan berkenaan lawatan pertama OdD ke sana. Posting lalu boleh di lihat di sini. Lawatan ini kiranya adalah lawatan kedua secara rasminya...Dulu, 2 hari berturut-turut pergi sebab memang dah bermalam di sekitar KL.

At MAHA 2012 show, no eye catching orchid for us, just few we bought. So wedecide to drop off at Hourai Orchid Nursery before get back to Penang. Officially this is my second visit here ;) Previous, I already posted about this nursery, you can read here.

Bagi pemniat orkid spesis...Hourai Orchid Nursery merupakan salah satu nursery yang amat OdD syorkan untuk pergi. Ada juga beberapa koleksi hybrid di jual, begitu juga dengan anak tisu. Jika boleh bersabar dan nak mencuba boleh lah beli anak tisu ni. Buat OdD dan teman, banyak juga koleksi istimewa bagi kami, yang mana berkenan di hati memang tak boleh tahan dan majoritinya memang boleh di beli...sebab utamanya kerana harganya amat berpatutan dan pokoknya juga sihat. Shopping time tak hingat jadi...penuh bonet kereta ;) Senyum lebar...cuma poket jer nipis....

For orchid collectors especially which like species orchid most, this the place you must visit! There also few hybrid orchids, but quite limited. Here you can buy matured plant or cutting plant from the garden. Even though if you dare enough, you can try to plant the orchid from tissue culture. For us, there are lots we can get it here, more than we expected ;) Big smile just our pocket became so thin....
