Among the creature in the world, there are smallest and the largest. Forget about other creature, I just want to talk about orchid ;).
Just some info to share. You know, the smallest orchid just found in 2009, even the history of orchid begin from Greek history. May be last time, facilities such as Microscope doesn't exist.
The world smallest orchid are found in the Ecuador's mountain by American botanist, Dr Lou Jost. This orchid just over 2 milimeters (0.08 inch) across and nearly see-through. It is very hard to see this orchid with naked eye, most of the people will overlooks this orchid if this orchid comes/ attach together with beautiful and bigger than this little tiny orchid. Dr Lou Jost had collected the larger species and studied in the greenhouse and coincidentally found this orchid attached with that collection after few month. This coincidentally found gave a new finding in the orchid world! Interested to know more? Click here.

I have few variant of these orchids in my garden. I have posted here and here. More article you can read here.

New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Most of the country in the world have their own national flower only few does not has national flower. National flower representing country and have their own meaning to them. The national flowers have cultural or religious roots that go back hundreds or even thousands of years and have been adopted or may be not adopted as national flower.

Hibiscus rosa sinensis
My country Malaysia the national flower is Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis or locally known Bunga Raya. This Bunga Raya was adopted as national flower in 1960 by our 1st Prime Minister. This flower was chosen as it symbolizes the principles of nationhood (rukun negara) with its 5 petals and the red color symbolized of courage and unity of its people. This flower existence in this country is unknown, but it is believed to have been brought to Malaysia through early trade from it's original home in China around 12th country, hence the scientific name sinensis meaning Chinese. The flower is abundance through out the country and easily grow here.  More article about this, click here.

Back to main subject, orchid as national flower. I have planted so many type of orchids and I never realize that orchid give a big meaning to other people around the world. With alphabet letter of the country in the world, I will share part by part of orchid as national flower. There is no A country list adopted orchid as their national flower. So will start with letter B, Country of  Belize.

Belize adopted the black orchid (Encyclia cochleatum/ Anacheilium cochleatum/Prosthechea cochleata) as their national flower. The flower is actually not black at all but purple in color. It is one of the few Orchids that flowers all year long, maybe this is why it is the National flower. Beside black orchid this orchid also known as 'The cockleshell orchid'. This orchid has upside down flowers with smooth ovoid to oblong-elliptic. Its can bloom for 6 months from one to many flowered, but this orchid no fragrant. This orchid originate from Belize, beside its also found in Florida, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Bahamas, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamica, Cayman Islands, Leewards, Puerto Rica, Windwards, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela and Colombia.

This orchid is epiphyte and can be found in dense tropical evergreen and oak forest from sea level up to 1900 meters. This orchid can grow in warm condition, so it can grow here in Malaysia and can bloom. I have seen this orchid in many Orchid Show in Malaysia and can grow well. I still don't have this orchid in my garden but I will.  In their origin country there have been eat cooked pseudobulbs.

May be you want to share your national flower or national state flower by linking to this post.

This post I want to share my orchid at OdD on the primary intergeneric hybrid orchid. Coincidentally I plant the parentage and this hybrid in my garden. Rhynchovola David Sanders or well known as Brassavola David Sanders. This is primary intergeneric hybrid between Brassavola cucullata and Rhyncolaelia dgibyana. Previously the R. dgibyana is classified in the same family of Brassavola.

Brassavola cucullata ([Linné] R. Brown) is a smaller plant, which prefers to grow mounted . Its pseudobulbs are long and thin (thick pencil-like leaves and pseudobulbs), and typically produce a single flower. The flowers exude a powerful fragrance at night. It comes from the West Indies, Central and northern South America where it is a warm to cool growing epiphyte of coastal rainforests up to 1800 meters in elevation. As long as bright light is provided, this delightful Cattleya relative is quite adaptable and will bloom regularly.

Brassavola dgibyana (previously) ([Lindley] Schlecter) is the famous orchid that is the responsible party for the "B" in many Blc.'s, that is, Brassocattleyas and Brassolaeliacattleyas. Now accurately called Rhyncholaelia digbyana, the orchid is still horticulturarly known as Brassavola digbyana because of the hundreds of hybrids that have been registered with that name. This orchid has the large 4-5 inch (10-12.5cm) flowers with deeply fimbriate lip that has added the fringe to many Cattleya hybrids. The color is usually glassine green and sometimes more whitish yellow and the flowers are night fragrant indicating a moth as the pollinator. This orchid is found in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, often in severe conditions of bright light and prolonged dryness, occasionally growing epiphytically on cactus. This orchid does not appreciate prolonged wetness, for that reason many orchidists choose to grow it mounted so that the roots may dry quickly.

The hybrid Brassavola David Sanders have both characteristic of these parentage including have fragrant at night same as their parentage. This hybrid was registered by Sanders in 1938.
